What is an Orangery?

In the past, orangeries were exclusively seen on the homes of the very wealthy. However, in recent years, they have become more affordable and popular for typical homeowners. Let’s look a bit into the history of orangeries. It originated during the Renaissance era between the 17th and 19th centuries to provide shelter for citrus trees and delicate plants during winter.

Over time orangeries evolved and became more versatile transforming into living spaces ideal for hosting social gatherings, dining or simply as a peaceful retreat space.  Stay with us in this article to learn more; we will be answering the typical questions regarding orangeries and hopefully addressing any queries you may have.

What’s the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

Orangeries usually have considerably more brickwork than conservatories. The main difference between a conservatory and an orangery lies in the amount of coverage of glass in the structure. An orangery is a house extension that usually has less than 75% of its roof made of glass and less than 50% of its walls made of glass. On the other hand a conservatory is a house extension that typically has glass walls that make up at least 50% of the wall space and a glass root that typically covers at least 75% of the roof area.

A traditional orangery is generally a little bit warmer than a conservatory. However; conservatories with quality glazing are not far behind. In terms of cost orangeries tend to be more expensive than conservatories due to the size, construction involved and style.

What are the main benefits of an orangery?

Versatile and stylish

Due to its great versatility, orangeries can give your living area an outstanding feeling of depth. With plenty of natural light and gorgeous outdoor views, they serve as fantastic spaces for entertaining friends and family.

Create more space

An orangery will instantly change your home and provide you with a lot more usable space by expanding your downstairs living area. Other rooms will benefit from this as well as they will appear much larger than they actually are.

Natural light and airy feel

One of the benefits of an orangery is their ability to combine the practicalities of an extension, including privacy and insulation, with the airy, light feel of a conservatory. A guaranteed way to brighten up every day.

Boost your property’s value

An orangery can boost your property’s value by 5-10% according to  property experts. In addition to increasing the asking price, they can also make your property more attractive to potential buyers.

Energy efficient

Orangeries are typically built from bricks, which are designed to retain and seal heat. When combined with energy efficient double or triple glazing, they can help reduce heating bills. However, during the summer, the temperature inside can be easily regulated by opening and closing its many windows and exterior doors.

Year-round usability

An orangery can be used in any season; in the summer they allow you to open the doors and enjoy the fresh air and the sunshine. They can be cosy during the colder months, keeping you warm and sheltered from the wind and rain.

Do you need planning permission for an orangery?

Orangeries usually don’t require planning approval; however you should always check with your local planning department. Nevertheless, they are not allowed to:

  • Occupy more than 50% of your house area
  • Be taller than four metres
  • Be more than half the width of the house
  • Have elevated platforms or balconies
  • Possess over three metres of eaves if it is located within two metres of a boundary

Here at Wimbledon Windows will inform you if the orangery you intend to buy does not meet these criteria. For more details, visit the UK’s planning permissions page, or speak to one of our experts.
